International Epilepsy Day

Overview:

International Epilepsy Day is a special event which promotes awareness of epilepsy in more than 130 countries each year. Every year on the second Monday of February people join together to acknowledge and highlight the problems faced by people with epilepsy, their families and carers.

Epilepsy is a chronic brain disease and affects people of all ages worldwide. It is characterized by recurrent seizures, which are brief episodes of involuntary movement that may involve a part of the body (partial) or the entire body (generalized) and are sometimes accompanied by loss of consciousness and control of bowel or bladder function.

Objectives:

  • Raising awareness of epilepsy at the public level and for the relevant authorities.
  • Shedding light on epilepsy and encourage discussion about epilepsy.
  • Strengthening the epilepsy movement by uniting epilepsy associations in a worldwide campaign.
  • Providing epilepsy associations with a significant fundraising opportunity.

Facts:

  • Epilepsy is one of the world's oldest recognized conditions.
  • Around 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy, making it one of the most common neurological diseases globally.
  • Up to 70% of people living with epilepsy respond to treatment.
  • Epilepsy is not contagious.
