World Blood Donor Day
​​Introduction:
Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate the World Blood Donor Day. Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. Coinciding with the birth date of Karl Landsteiner, who discovered the ABO blood group system, this event is celebrated around the world on June 14th. The first World Blood Donor Day​ was established in 2005.​

Facts:
The Saudis ranked first among 28 countries in terms of blood donation by 58%, according to a study of the UK’s research organization «Ipsos MORI».

Objectives:
The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure the quality, safety, and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need; thus saving lives of many people.
