Overview:
Skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells that most often develops on areas of skin exposed to harmful sunrays. Skin cancer can develop on different areas of the body, including parts that are not usually exposed to sunrays, like the genitals and buttocks. Skin cancer, including melanoma, and basal and squamous cell carcinoma, is the most common type of cancer. May of every year is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
Objectives:
- Raise awareness of early detection methods of skin cancer.
- Raise awareness of prevention methods.
- Educate the public about skin cancer and provide facts about it.
Facts:
- Melanoma is more common in men overall, but before age 50 the rates are higher in women than in men.
- If diagnosed early, skin cancer can be curable.
