Overview:
World Down Syndrome Day is observed annually on March 21. It was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011 to raise awareness of Down syndrome, support affected individuals, promote their rights, and empower their families.

  • Highlight the role of people with Down syndrome in society.
  • Encourage individuals with Down syndrome to pursue education or employment.
Facts:
  • Down syndrome occurs in approximately 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,100 live births worldwide.
  • Older mothers are at a higher risk of having a child with Down syndrome compared to younger mothers.
  • Infants with Down syndrome and congenital heart defects are five times more likely to die during the first year of life than those without heart disease.
  • Quality of life for people with Down syndrome can be improved through appropriate healthcare and support services.
