Overview:
World Hearing Day is an annual observance aimed at raising awareness of the importance of hearing health, preventing and addressing hearing problems, and promoting ear care. It also encourages communities to seek related health services. The day is observed every year on March 3rd, under this year’s theme: “From Community to School: Hearing Care for All Children.”
Objectives:
- Prevent avoidable hearing loss among children.
- Strengthen early detection and early intervention for hearing impairment.
Facts:
- Around 90 million children and adolescents (aged 5–19 years) live with hearing loss worldwide.
- More than 60% of hearing loss in children can be prevented through simple public health measures.
- Failure to detect hearing problems early may negatively affect speech, language, cognitive and social development, and can impact academic achievement in the future.
- Early diagnosis and treatment help reduce long-term effects on education and overall development.
