World Antibiotics Awareness Week

Overview:
In line with the World Antibiotic Awareness Week during the period 18-24 November, the General Administration for Health Facilities Infection Control at the Ministry of Health is conducting extensive activities in health facilities in all regions of the Kingdom. To raise awareness about antimicrobials, raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance globally, and encourage health practitioners in health facilities and those responsible for developing policies to adopt best practices to avoid the continued emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.

Implementation of infection control precautions is an effective way to reduce spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, through hand washing, limiting exposure to infected or potentially infected people, personal hygiene, and taking the necessary vaccinations according to age group.

Objectives:
  • Increasing awareness and better understanding of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education and training.
Facts:
Antimicrobial resistance threatens the effectiveness of preventing and treating an ever-increasing range of infections caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi.
  • The success of major surgeries and chemotherapy for cancer is at risk without the availability of effective antibiotics.
  • Health care costs for patients with resistant infections are higher than care for patients with non-resistant infections; Because the disease takes longer, additional tests are required, and more expensive medications are used.
