Brain cancer day

Overview:
  World Brain Tumor Day is being celebrated on the 8th of June every year since 2000.
Facts:
  • Brain tumors are tumors that affect the brain or its affiliated organs, such as the spinal cord, the meninges, and nerves of the brain. In this case, they are called primary brain tumors. As for tumors that affect the brain as a result of spread of the tumor from another organ, they are called secondary brain tumors.
  • Brain and spinal cord tumors can affect both children and adults, but they are more common in the elderly
  • The main cause of most brain tumors is unknown, but there are many risk factors that may increase the chances of developing it, including:
  • Age: The risk of developing brain tumors increases with age (most of them occur in the elderly between the ages of 85 and 89), but some are more common in children.
  • Exposure to radiation: it causes some brain tumors, and some types are more common in those who have undergone radiation therapy, computed tomography, or x-rays of the head.
  • Family history and genetic conditions: Certain genetic conditions increase the risk of brain tumors, including tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis type 1, neurofibromatosis type 2, and Turner syndrome.
