Introduction:
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), which has been backed by the United Nations since December 2012, is annually observed on March 21st to raise awareness about Down syndrome and support those people with syndrome and their families.
Facts:
- Down syndrome is a genetic disorder; as the person with Down syndrome is born with extra chromosome that disrupts the normal course of development.
- In the 1980s, the average life expectancy of a person with Down syndrome was 25 years, while now it is up to 60 years.
- Down syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal disorders.
- Some people with Down syndrome have health problems, such as congenital heart defects (CHD), but most of these problems can be treated nowadays.
- People with Down syndrome can study, work, and coexist in the community very naturally.
