International Day of Older Persons

Introduction:
The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated annually in October worldwide to highlight the significant contributions of older people to society and to raise awareness of ageing issues and challenges in today’s world. The older persons work to contribute to society through volunteering works, as well as transferring expertise and knowledge gained through their lives to other generations, while emphasizing their ability to continue giving.

Facts:
  • The older persons constitute 4.19% of the total population of Saudi Arabic.
  • About 25.5% of older persons suffer from diabetes or hypertension.
  • The number of older persons around the world will rise from 900 million in 2015 to 2 billion in 2050.
  • Chronic diseases are the most common in older persons​.
  • Good health in old age is the result of a healthy lifestyle from a young age.

Objectives: 
  • Promote the role of the older persons in society and their building it.
  • Raise the awareness of the importance of health and psychological care for older persons.
  • Stop violence and abuse against older persons.
  • Prevent accidents, especially falls and injuries, in older persons.
