Overview:
World Children's Day was first established in 1954 and is celebrated on November 20th of each year, to promote international cooperation and awareness among children around the world to improve the welfare of children. November 20th is an important day; the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and signed the Child Rights Bill in 1989.
Objectives:
- Strengthen international cohesion and awareness among children around the world.
- Provide an environment in which all children are enrolled in schools, safe from harm, and able to achieve their potential and dreams.
- Increase awareness of children's rights and improve children's welfare.
Facts:
- The number of deaths among children under the age of five has decreased by more than 50% since 1989.
- The percentage of children suffering from malnutrition has decreased by almost half since 1990.
- 2.6 billion children have safe drinking water compared to 1990.
