Overview
June 25 of each year is dedicated to highlighting vitiligo, which causes the appearance of spots in which the skin loses its color. These discolored spots usually increase in size over time. This condition may affect the skin in any part of the body.
Objectives
Increase awareness of vitiligo, and appropriate care and treatment methods among the public and healthcare providers.
Facts:
- Vitiligo is not life-threatening and is not contagious.
- Vitiligo occurs when the cells that produce melanin die or stop performing their function. Vitiligo affects people of all skin types, but it may be more noticeable in people with brown or black skin.
- Vitiligo usually appears first on the hands, face, and areas surrounding the body openings and genitals.
