World Asthma Day

Overview: 
The world celebrates World Asthma Day on May 4th every year. The Global Asthma Initiative aims to enhance awareness of asthma and control it. Asthma is known as a chronic lung disease that affects people of all ages. It is caused by inflammation and contraction of the muscles surrounding the bronchial tubes, making breathing more difficult. Symptoms can include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. These symptoms can be mild or severe, and may come and go over time.

Facts:
  • Asthma triggers vary from person to person and can include: allergens in the air, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, or pet dander, respiratory infections such as the common cold, physical activity, cold air, air pollutants and irritants, like smoke.
  • The risk of developing asthma increases if other members of the family also have asthma; Especially a close relative, such as a parent or sibling.
  • The risk of developing asthma increases in people who suffer from other allergic conditions, such as eczema and rhinitis (hay fever).

Objectives:
  • Increase awareness of asthma symptoms and how to control it.
  • Educate health practitioners on the importance of correct diagnosis and how to control the disease.
  • Support people with asthma and educate them on the importance of avoiding asthma triggers and controlling it.
