Multiple pregnancy (twins and more)

Multiple pregnancy:

It is when more than one fetus is pregnant, and it occurs if more than one ovum is released during the menstrual cycle and each ovum is fertilized by a sperm; It may grow more than one fetus and is called non-identical twins, and it is possible for one ovum to be fertilized by one sperm, but it is divided to give more than one fetus and this is called identical twins.

Causes:
Using fertility drugs to induce ovulation often causes more than one ovum to be released from the ovary and can lead to twins, triplets or more. IVF can lead to multiple pregnancies if more than one embryo is transferred to the uterus, too. Women over 35 are more likely to release two or more ova during one menstrual cycle than younger women.

Symptoms:
Women who are pregnant with twins may have more morning sickness or breast pain than women with a single fetus, and they may gain weight more quickly. Most multiple pregnancies are detected during an ultrasound.

Complications of multiple pregnancy:
The most common complication is premature delivery; More than half of all twins are born prematurely, with triplets and more always being born prematurely.

Weight gain and multiple pregnancies:
Most pregnant women need to gain more weight than women who are pregnant with one fetus, as each fetus needs an additional 300 calories to its original calories per day; So, you should talk to your doctor about the correct amount of weight gain during pregnancy.

Exercise and multiple pregnancies:
Maintaining activity during multiple pregnancies is important for health while avoiding strenuous exercise. It is recommended to try swimming and yoga before childbirth, and walking. You should also exercise for 30 minutes a day. If problems arise during pregnancy, the doctor may recommend avoiding exercise.

Effect of multiple pregnancies on the risk of gestational diabetes:
Women carrying twins are more likely to develop gestational diabetes. This condition can increase the risk of pre-eclampsia and diabetes later in life. Newborns may also have breathing problems or low blood sugar levels. A healthy diet, exercise, and sometimes medications can reduce the risk of these complications.

Impact of multiple pregnancies on childbirth:
The chance of a cesarean section is higher with a pregnancy with more than one fetus. In some cases, twins can be delivered naturally.
