World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2025

World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2025

Overview:

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing global threat, with pathogens becoming resistant to drugs, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of illness and death. To address this crisis, WHO adopted a global action plan in 2015 that aims to raise awareness and understanding through educational campaigns such as World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week.

Objectives:

• Raising community awareness of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education, and training.

Facts:

  • Antimicrobial resistance threatens the effectiveness of preventing and treating infections that are constantly increasing, caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi.
  • The success of major surgeries and cancer chemotherapy are at risk without the availability of effective antibiotics.
  • The costs of health care provided to patients with resistant infections are higher than the costs of caring for patients with non-resistant infections; due to the disease taking longer, additional tests being performed, and the use of more expensive medications.

Official Date:

Globally: November 18-24, 2025.

Locally: Jumada Al-Awwal 27 – Jumada Al Thani 6, 1447 AH.
