World Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day

The World Multiple Sclerosis Day is celebrated on May 27th of every year to raise awareness and bring patients with the MS together. It is the only international campaign to spread awareness on this disease. Every year, MS campaigners convene to provide the public with information about the MS and spread awareness about its effect on more than one million persons around the world.

Statistics:

The MS is one of the most common neurological disorders, which causes disability in young adults. It is spread in all countries of the world as indicated by epidemiological data. An estimated 2.3 million people in the world have multiple sclerosis, and probably there are hundreds of thousands, who have not been diagnosed with the disease yet. It is also likely that other people are indirectly affected by the disease while caring for an infected person with the MS. Most of the affected persons are diagnosed with the disease at the age of 25 to 31 years, with two times as many women as men affected.
According to the Saudi Multiple Sclerosis Advisory Group, the disease is spread among females more than males, mostly affecting youths at age of 20-40 years. It is more common in cold countries than hot ones, where infection rates in the southern part of Europe like Italy and Greece are about 50 per 100,000 persons; while the incidence is higher in northern Europe as the rate in Scotland is 100-200 per 10,000 persons.
