Physical Activity During Ramadan Enhances Public Health

23 February 2026

Lifestyle patterns change during the holy month of Ramadan, prompting those who are fasting to seek ways to maintain physical activity and overall well-being during fasting hours. Specialists believe that exercising during Ramadan plays an important role in promoting public health, provided that the timing and intensity of exercise are appropriate for fasting.
Dr. Ibrahim Bakri, a specialist in Sports Management at Jazan University, explained that physical activity does not stop during Ramadan but should be practiced wisely. He noted that low-intensity activities before iftar, such as walking, stretching, and light exercises that stimulate the muscles, are appropriate choices because they help improve blood circulation without excessively depleting the body’s energy and fluid reserves.
He added that the hour before Maghrib is an ideal time for such light activities, as the body is close to replenishing its fluids and energy, reducing the risk of fatigue or low blood sugar. He also stressed the importance of avoiding strenuous exercise while fasting.
Dr. Bakri recommended postponing high-intensity exercise until at least three hours after iftar to allow sufficient time for digestion and for the body to restore its fluid and nutritional balance. He explained that resistance training, running, and team sports require full physical readiness to avoid exhaustion or muscle cramps.
He emphasized that exercising during Ramadan helps manage body weight, improve cardiovascular and respiratory fitness, regulate blood glucose levels, reduce stress, and enhance sleep quality, all of which positively affect daily performance and well-being during fasting.
He also highlighted the importance of drinking sufficient water between iftar and suhoor, eating balanced meals, warming up before exercise, and cooling down afterward to reduce the risk of injuries.
Dr. Bakri described walking as the simplest and most sustainable form of physical activity during Ramadan due to its direct benefits for heart health, mood improvement, and overall quality of life. He noted that just a few minutes of regular walking can make a noticeable difference in overall fitness and energy levels.
He concluded by pointing to the abundance of well-equipped walking paths, public parks, waterfront promenades, and modern sports tracks across Saudi Arabia, which have helped establish physical activity as a way of life. These facilities make walking and light exercise accessible and safe for all members of society, supporting the Kingdom’s Quality of Life objectives and encouraging healthy habits that extend beyond the holy month.
