Taif Health indicated that the emergency department of King Faisal Medical Complex in Taif received a child aged one year and eight months in a critical health condition, and after clinical, laboratory and radiological examinations, it was found that he had hydrocephalus with severe infections in the old cerebral peritoneal valve with infections in the ventricles of the brain, in addition to the presence of purulent abscess over the old valve with signs of infections inside brain.
The treating medical team decided that a surgical intervention was necessary to remove the inflamed valve from the body and install an external drain for the brain’s ventricles. The child was referred to the intensive care unit where he has stayed for 6 weeks, during which the insufficiency of the heart muscle, breathing, and cerebral infections were controlled. The patient was given intensive antibiotics according to the result of tests of the cerebrospinal fluid until the child's condition improved, and to ensure that the fluid was free of any signs of infection
The treating team confirmed that the external drain was lifted, then the patient was prepared to undergo surgery to install a new cerebral peritoneal valve treated with antibiotics to protect the patient from any new infections, until the patient left the hospital in good health to complete follow-up with the neurosurgery clinic.
