Dr. Al-Weheibi: HESN Program Enhances the Public Health in the Hajj Season
05 October 2014
Within the framework of the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) efforts meant for capitalizing on the modern technologies in the public health field, the MOH continues applying the Health Electronic Surveillance Network (HESN) in this year’s Hajj season. This aims at boosting the public health as a principal goal for the Public Health Agency.

This is through drawing on the modern technologies and e-communication means for supporting the Agency’s tasks and responsibilities, centering on preventing from the infectious and non-infectious diseases, supporting the environment health and improving the health behavior. As such, precise, high standards are applied, living up to the ones applied in the medically and technologically developed countries.

According to the Head of the Information Technology and Statistics Committee, Dr. Abdullah Al-Weheibi, the ‘HESN” Program is one of the working systems, and it is an online interconnected, resilient application. And, it is a version built from the public health system for monitoring and managing the diseases and epidemics, an e-system providing those working in the health field and decision-makers with the accurate information enabling them to deliver a high level of the health services. This is through using a number of services and programs for maintaining the public health and primary healthcare.

Dr Al-Weheibi went on adding that this system was evolved in Canada due to the growing need for monitoring and holding back the spread of the infectious diseases such as influenza, as well as following up on  the vaccinations. Also, the system provides many services and programs, noting that it is distinguished with resiliency going with the healthcare requirements, which differs according the geographical area. It is implemented in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in a manner that meets the requirements of each region according to its characteristics and needs.

In a similar fashion, Dr. al-Weheibi highlighted the fact that the HESN e-Program currently includes several units such as the infectious and epidemiological diseases investigation, epidemiological diseases outbreak, vaccines and inoculations, inoculation and vaccine stockpile, work organization and management, reports and public health reports, given that other new units will be added in the future.

All the more, Dr. Al-Weheibi pointed out that the significance of the HESN e-Program lies in electronically unifying the health operations, models and reports in the entire Kingdom. This in turn increases the information accuracy, and abridges the differences in gathering it between the regions and the MOH –related facilities. Still, obtaining the health information and statistics in writing results in many errors, and its revising requires even more efforts. This complicates and delays the retrieving and verifying of the information. With the HESN e-Program taking effect, all these drawbacks will be averted.
