23 September 2013
The Consultant and Head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Department of Pediatrics in King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Prof. Sami Hussain Al-Hajjar, said that the countries of the world, especially those specialized in dealing with the human gatherings, look at the Kingdom with pride and admiration for its high-level expertise and professionalism in dealing with the mass gatherings; adding that the Kingdom is considered one of the leading countries, if not the only country in the world, that has experience in dealing with the human gatherings, which exceed the barrier of two million people annually, whether in the Hajj or Umrah season.

Dr. Al-Hajjar added that the Kingdom has proved its ability, upon the testimony of the western and eastern countries, to develop tight scientific plans to secure the safety of the pilgrims, even in the event of pandemics. The clearest proof of that is the success of the pilgrimage season in 2009 coinciding with the outbreak of the novel swine-origin influenza virus A (H1N1) that hit the whole world since then.

Within the same vein, Dr. Al-Hajjar highlighted that the national plan for monitoring the influenza virus (H1N1) had succeeded, expressing optimism over achieving another success in the coming pilgrimage season by overcoming the challenges of the novel Coronavirus and dealing quickly with any developments.

Furthermore, Dr. Al-Hajjar underscored that the launch of the Mass Gathering Medicine Diploma has coincided with the establishment of the International Mass-Gathering Medicine Center; with the aim of conducting more researches and studies to enrich scientific research, and develop the scientific capabilities of medical staff, thus, they will be able to provide the best medical and preventive services to ensure the safety of pilgrims.

In conclusion, Dr. Al-Hajjar expected for the Kingdom to be a destination for the specialists of Mass Gathering Medicine coming from all over the world in the near future.
