How to quit smoking… in a course launched today

Ministry of Health launched today a training course in quit smoking methods organized in cooperation between the Ministry's Training and Scholarship General Department and Tobacco Control Program.

The three-day event has been organized at Hala Tuilp Inn Hotel, Al-Khobar to deliver 10 hours of continuous medical training approved by Saudi Council for Health Specialities. It was dedicated for 25 physicians from health affairs directorates in the Eastern Region, Ahsa, Hafr Al-Baten and Makkah in addition to other health staff working in the Tobacco Control Program in Riyadh.

The General Supervisor of the MOH Tobacco Control Program and Secretary of the National Committee for Tobacco Control, Dr. Majed Al Munif expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by the MOH General Directorate for Training and Scholarship.

He also appreciated Eastern region Health Affairs efforts and cooperation, hoping that it would benefit the attendees so that they can provide community with scientifically-based quit-smoking services.

The first day of the course included lectures covering the five topics i.e. course objectives, behavioral therapy for smoking cessation, the physiology of nicotine addiction, quit-smoking and quit-smoking treatment steps. On the second day, talks and discussions has been illustrated regarding cognitive behavioral therapy to quit smoking and the use of carbon monoxide measurement and results interpretation. The lectures on the third day will include pharmaco-therapies, available medications in the Kingdom and the physician’s and nurse’s roles in the quit-smoking process and case follow-up.
