New accrediting commission to be formed, says Al-Mane
03 September 2008
The Minister of Health Dr. Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Mane has revealed the news of steps taken for formation of a new commission for accrediting health establishments under the name "The Saudi Commission for Accrediting Health establishments (SCAHE)". The commission will work for ensuring high quality health services that meet the anticipations of health officials and fulfill the needs of patients and citizens.

He said the new commission will contribute to upgrading performance in health establishments, which will provide for limited medical mistakes and high quality health services. "The project has been submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval", he said. "It will be linked to the Council of Ministers, have independent financial and administrative status, and directed by a council of trustees under the chairmanship of the Minister of Health".

The project which has been reviewed by a recent meeting of the Council of Health Services will replace the Central Council for Accrediting Health Establishments.

According to Dr. Al-Mane, the system of accrediting new health projects by independent accrediting bodies is implemented in most countries throughout the world, especially the advanced countries such as USA, Canada, Britain, Australia, and some Arab countries. "It has been proven by late experiments that such a system leads to limited medical mistakes and ensures safety of patients", he said. "It upgrades performance, compensates for shortages in human and equipment capabilities, assists in effective use of resources, helps in unification of work procedures, and creates opportunities for positive competition for attaining better quality", he said.

The new commission will provide detailed and continuous evaluation for performance in health establishments, eliminate inconsistency and contradiction among health employees and medical specialists, and assist in controlling the reasons behind medical mistakes.

In the same context, the MOH official spokesman Dr. Khalid Al-Marghalni said the Central Council for Accrediting Health Establishments is preparing the arrangements for implementing quality standards for the purpose of paving the way for carrying out the accrediting process.
