Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an urgent global health and socioeconomic crisis, that threatens all age groups in all regions, with low- and middle-income countries most affected. Acknowledging the gravity of this issue, over 40 Member States concurred during the 154th session of the WHO Executive Board in January 2024, that AMR should be considered a top priority on the global health agenda, calling for immediate and significant action. A resolution encouraging Member States to implement cross sectoral National Action Plans (NAPs) was adopted at the 77th WHA in May, which will be followed by the declaration of political commitments and concrete targets against AMR at the High-Level Meeting on AMR during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2024.
As the final event of the year, the 4th AMR Ministerial Conference, will be hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on November 15th and 16th in Jeddah, including a day of side-events on the 14th of November for state and non-state actors. The conference will present a significant opportunity for participating countries to take forward the political commitments made throughout the year and align on collective actions to addressing the rising challenge of antimicrobial resistances in Global Health. Under the theme “From Declaration to Implementation - Accelerating Actions Through Multisectoral Partnerships for the Containment of AMR” the conference will provide a platform for exchange of best practices and pave the road to implementation across the entire ecosystems, including human- and animal health, agriculture as well as the environment.
