Organ Donation

Organ Donation

Donation Definition:
Organ donation is a surgical procedure in which an organ or tissue is removed from the body of a living or deceased donor and transplanted into the body of a recipient in need of a new organ due to damage to one of their own.

Donation Types:
1.Donation from a Living Donor:
A living donor can donate a part of their liver, one of their kidneys, or bone marrow to a specific recipient or an unspecified recipient based on medical need and compatibility.
2.Donation from a Brain-Dead Donor:
Organ donation after brain death involves legally removing any organ from a person who has given prior consent during their lifetime or from the nearest relatives after death.
A brain-dead donor can donate the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, intestines, bones, corneas, and heart valves.

How to Donate?
Organ Donation Mechanism in Case of Brain Death:
If you wish to donate your organs after death, you can register your intention through the Tawakkalna application.
Is Registration in Tawakkalna Sufficient for Organ Donation After Death?
Registration in Tawakkalna only indicates your wish to donate; it is not sufficient by itself. The family is consulted, and their written consent is obtained upon death. Confirming your desire to donate with your family helps them make the decision to donate in case of death.
Organ Donation Mechanism During Life:
A living person can go to the nearest transplant center approved by the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation and express their wish to donate. They will be directed according to the procedures for living donors.

Conditions for Organ Donation During Life:
  • The donor shall be at least 18 years old.
  • The donor shall be in good mental and physical health.
  • Donation shall not harm the donor or the recipient.
  • The donation shall be supported by a written and documented declaration from the donor.
  • Blood types shall be compatible.
