The Ministry of Health (MOH), in cooperation with the General Authority for Media Regulation, has monitored the spread of misleading information on social media regarding statin cholesterol-lowering medications. This misinformation has led some patients to stop taking their prescribed drugs without consulting their physicians , a behavior that poses a serious risk to their health.
The Ministry stressed that no medication should ever be discontinued or changed without medical advice, reaffirming that cholesterol-lowering drugs, including statins, are safe, effective, and approved both internationally and locally by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA). These medications play a vital role in preventing heart diseases and strokes, and in reducing complications among patients with high cholesterol and related chronic conditions.
The MOH also emphasized the importance of medical professionalism and ethical practice, urging healthcare practitioners to avoid engaging in unverified discussions or sharing statements that may cause confusion or endanger patient safety.
Meanwhile, the General Authority for Media Regulation confirmed that it will take appropriate legal action against anyone found to be spreading misleading medical information or violating professional ethics, based on reports referred by the Ministry of Health.
These efforts aim to protect public health and promote a culture of awareness built on accurate, evidence-based medical information.
