Saudi Arabia Ranks First Globally in Drowning Prevention Efforts
25 July 2025

July 25 marks World Drowning Prevention Day, an occasion Saudi Arabia commemorates annually to raise public awareness about drowning risks, promote preventive behavior, and protect lives. According to the World Health Organization, the Kingdom now ranks first globally in meeting water safety and rescue standards. National efforts have contributed to a 17% reduction in drowning-related deaths and helped avoid an economic burden exceeding SAR 800 million by lowering injuries and easing pressure on the healthcare system.

Minister of Health, H.E. Fahad AlJalajel affirmed that drowning prevention is a strategic pillar within the national health system and reflects the Kingdom’s strong commitment to saving lives. It aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, particularly the Health Sector Transformation Program, which aims to promote preventive care and raise life expectancy.
“The Kingdom has established strong preventive policies and now leads globally in drowning prevention,” AlJalajel said. “The 17% drop in drowning deaths demonstrates the impact of institutional work and unified national efforts to safeguard lives.”
Saudi Arabia’s recognition comes as a continuation of its preventive approach, which began with the adoption of the National Drowning Prevention Policy in 2021. Overseen by a standing committee led by the Public Health Authority (Weqaya) and comprising 12 government entities, the policy has driven 12 national initiatives that have effectively reduced injuries and fatalities.
