South Al-Qunfudah General Hospital: Successful Fixation of Patient’s Leg Fracture by Ilizarov Ring Fixator
14 March 2018
The orthopedic surgical team of South Al-Qunfudah General Hospital has performed a first-of-its-kind surgery across the region to fix a double fracture in one of a patient’s leg by Ilizarov ring fixator apparatus. She was admitted to the hospital after a traffic accident that resulted in this double fracture. Due to the difficulty of performing a traditional surgery to install screws and a metal plate in such case, as well as the possibility of developing other complications like infection, the team decided to use the Ilizarov ring fixator apparatus with external fixation.

It is worth mentioning that this apparatus features saves the patient the incidence of such complications, let alone enabling him/her to walk the next day after surgery.

On the other hand, in its 2017 achievements report, MOH added 65 new healthcare centers, making all health centers across the Kingdom into 2,390 instead of 2,325. These centers have helped provide facility-based health services to over 300,000 citizens. These centers have been enhanced with necessary manpower, appliances and medical supplies. Also, new 39 centers are designated to operate for longer hours up to 11:00 p.m. In so doing, 204 centers so far operate up to 11:00 p.m. instead of 165 centers before. MOH seeks to provide comprehensive coverage across the Kingdom, to reduce congestion and to meet the beneficiaries’ needs. Hence, more manpower (highly trained doctors) have been supplied, in addition to training the existing medical and administrative staff and providing security services in all centers on duty.
