Prince Sultan Cardiac Center - Al-Ahsa: Successful Surgery Saves Patient in His 40s
13 February 2018

By Allah's Grace, in collaboration with the vascular department of King Fahd Hospital, the specialist team of Prince Sultan Cardiac Center - Al-Ahsa has successfully saved a patient in his 40s who had heart arrest and hypotension due to his mitral valve failure. It is noted that he had both his mitral and aortic valves replaced 20 years ago. Immediately, he was admitted by the emergency to the ICU. Then he had an open-heart surgery, during which the team found one of the previously implanted valve leaflets (cusps) missing. A new valves has successfully been implanted, while his artificial aortic valve was in good condition.

After the patient stabilized, he was removed from the ventilator and had a CT scan which showed the missing leaflet embedded in his femoral artery entry in his abdominal area due to its breakup and diffusion; thus, requiring an emergency intervention by the vascular surgeons of King Fahad Hospital to remove the broken parts of valve leaflet. Thank Allah the surgery has been successful and the patient has been discharged upon recovery.

It is noted that Prince Sultan Cardiac Center - Al-Ahsa provides cardiac healthcare services. So far, it has performed 626 open-heart surgeries since 2017 with 96% success rate.
