Mahail General Hospital: Waiting Lists Reduced from 14 to 1 Day
02 November 2017
Mahail-Asir health sector has connected all health centers with Mahail General Hospital in terms of patient referral, to relieve the pressure on the hospital, to avoid congestion in outpatient clinics incurring forced resort to the hospital for an appointment, and to provide seamless services to patients with no need for their physical presence in the hospital. The program has effectively reduced the appointment waiting lists from two weeks to one day only. Monthly referral cases have significantly been increased from 2,230 to 3,900, with referral response rise from 20% to 92%.

The program features e-referral of patients through primary healthcare centers to Mahail General Hospital. The center receives patients, checks his/her vital signs, then emails the results to the referral program coordinator of the hospital's outpatient clinics. Then, the medical department receives referrals for triage, confirmation and checkup by a specialist. After that, on the same day an e-file of all appointments is emailed to the general health coordinator to communicate with patients and send them  copies of their appointments through SMS within 24-48 hours maximum.

It is noted that the Ministry of Health (MOH) is currently implementing MOH's Performance Program, which aims to boost productivity, performance quality and efficiency of health services in hospitals. The program is in line with the National Transformation Program 2020 towards achieving the Saudi Vision 2030. The program covers 70 hospitals and features over 40 indicators to measure the performance of seven key therapeutic aspects, which have positively reduced the waiting times.
