29 October 2017
A surgical team at the Cardiac Center of King Khaled Hospital- Hail, has saved a patient shot by a nail gun with a nail ended next to the sternum (breastbone) at the right side. The injured person was brought to emergency department in an unstable condition. After due medical examinations, he was diagnosed with a blood clot in the pericardial sac and a metal body at the back of the aorta and in front of the bronchus. Immediately, he was taken to the operating room, and through an incision in the sternum, the team removed the foreign body, a 5cm long nail.  After his condition stabilized, he was transferred to the cardiac center's ICU, and a laryngoscope was done to him to ensure no injuries to his bronchus. He was also removed from the ECMO machine two hours after entering the ICU, and now he is in a stable condition, thank Allah.

It is noted that the surgery was conducted two hours after the surgical team was called, and lasted for almost 90 minutes.

It is noted that the Ministry of Health (MOH) is currently implementing MOH's Performance Program, which aims to boost productivity, performance quality and efficiency of health services in hospitals. The program is in line with the National Transformation Program 2020 towards achieving the Saudi Vision 2030. The program covers 70 hospitals and features over 40 indicators to measure the performance of seven key therapeutic aspects.
