PRK Vision Correction Surgeries Launched at Sharoura Hospital
29 December 2020

Najran Health Affairs General Directorate has announced that the Ophthalmology Section at Sharoura General Hospital launched Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) vision correction surgeries. This has been after the Section was fully-equipped with the latest ophthalmology devices and specialized staff for the first time in the Hospital.

In this regard, 7 two-minute one-day PRK surgeries have been performed. Patients have left on the same day of the surgery and have followed up with the Hospital’s Ophthalmology Section.

The Directorate also has noted that PRK was introduced in its health facilities within the Performance Improvement Programs (PIP) to serve cases of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and corneal opacity. This aims to reduce the hardships of patients by offering them access to treatment services at their residence and contract waiting lists at the Eye Center in the region’s King Khalid Hospital.

It is worth mentioning that in 2020 Sharoura Hospital served 127,000 Emergency (ER) cases and outpatients, while the medical cadres successfully performed 949 surgeries. Additionally, 1,820 births were delivered at the hospital, 305,775 laboratory tests were conducted, and 6,195 dialysis sessions were performed. In the same context, medical imaging was applied to 30,112 patients and 119,863 prescriptions were dispensed.
