MOH: Medical Team Managed to Repair a Woman Face with Artificial Skin at Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Hospital
16 February 2017
Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Hospital in Riyadh has made a breakthrough when a medical team led by Head of Plastic Surgery Department Dr. Maher Al-Ahdab conducted a surgery to repair deep tissues of a female patient using artificial skin. The patient was suffering from cheek deformity following removal of jaw tumor and replacing the jaw bone with metal plates in place of the lost bones. With time, the skin began to shrink into the metal plates making them fully apparent in an annoying manner. Due to the difficulty of the case and limited options available, it was agreed to compensate the deep tissues and lost fat of the face, through multiple layers of  artificial skin that have been inserted under her skin to wrap the metal plates and restore appearance of the skin in a way that the plate cannot be seen through it. Thanks to Allah, the surgery is successful.

It is noteworthy that the artificial skin is usually used to compensate the missing skin, but using it in deep tissues and in metal plates is reckoned a rare medical achievement.
