MOH issues safety alert on pseudoephedrine pharmaceuticals
01 December 2008
Ref to what have circulated through some internet sources and SMS messages regarding a generalization issued by an MOH directorate of health affairs, whereby pseudoephedrine containing pharmaceuticals should not be sold unless as per a medical subscription, MOH would like to inform that the Medicines Registration Committee (MRC) has reviewed the subject, including recommendations of relative international organizations such as the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA). Finding no side effects in pseudoephedrine containing pharmaceuticals that necessitate its recalling, it has recommended that such drugs can be sold through pharmacies without medical subscription as is the case in advanced countries. At the same time, MRC demanded relative producing companies to include within the internal guidelines of such drugs the necessary warnings of not issuing them to children under two years unless as per a medical subscription and the necessity of seeking medical consultancy in case of not recovery within seven days.

As per the MOH medical alert all citizens and residents are requested not to take as granted all information circulated through the internet. A toll free telephone line 8002494444 has been allotted for answering relative enquiries.
