Seha Virtual Hospital has successfully performed 11 consecutive remote robotic surgeries in specialized and highly complex fields, as part of an integrated national partnership involving Hail Health Cluster, King Saud University Medical City, Zain KSA, and EDGE, a company specializing in robotic devices and solutions, represented by Al-Amin Company.
The achievement reflects the advancement of the healthcare system in transferring specialized medical expertise across different regions of the Kingdom and expanding access to advanced surgical services, making it easier for beneficiaries to receive high-quality and efficient healthcare. This aligns with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program and
Saudi Vision 2030 toward a “Vibrant Society” with better health and quality of life.
Seha Virtual Hospital explained that the surgical team in Riyadh successfully performed the remote procedures for beneficiaries receiving care in Hail and other locations in Riyadh, as part of an integrated network that is expanding to cover multiple sites across the Kingdom, including remote areas.
The procedures included a right lower lobectomy, marking the second remote pulmonary lobectomy performed globally and the fifth remote lung resection procedure globally. The surgeries also included sleeve gastrectomy, hernia repair, pelvic exploration, and hysterectomy.
The achievement was part of the “Saudi Protocol for Remote Surgery,” launched by
Seha Virtual Hospital as a national reference framework governing robotic medical interventions in accordance with the highest standards of quality and safety. The protocol facilitates the transfer of advanced expertise across regions and enables beneficiaries to access specialized medical expertise wherever they are.
The robotic surgical systems used in the project have received approval from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), confirming their readiness for clinical use and supporting the highest safety standards in accordance with the Kingdom’s approved regulatory requirements.
Prior to implementation, the project underwent a series of clinical, technical, and training tests and simulations to verify the readiness of the systems and medical and technical teams. This strengthens the reliability of the operational model and reinforces the Kingdom’s leadership in adopting the world’s most advanced medical technologies.
