World Hypertension Day 2026

World Hypertension Day 2026

Overview:

World Hypertension Day is observed annually on May 17 to raise awareness of high blood pressure, a common condition that can become life-threatening if left untreated. Because it often has no symptoms, it is known as the “silent killer." Measuring blood pressure is the only way to detect it. The day also promotes accurate blood pressure measurement and the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases associated with hypertension.

Objectives:

  • Raise awareness of the importance of regular blood pressure measurement.
  • Educate the public about hypertension and its risks.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Encourage regular physical activity.

Facts:

  • Hypertension is one of the leading causes of premature death worldwide.
  • 44% of adults with hypertension are unaware they have the condition.
  • An estimated 1.4 billion adults aged 30–79 years worldwide have hypertension.
  • Healthy lifestyle changes can help lower high blood pressure and reduce the risk of complications.

Official Date:

Globally: May 17th, 2026.

Locally: Dhu al-Qi'dah 30th, 1447H.
