Overview:
Global Skin Cancer Awareness Month is observed every May to raise awareness about skin cancer, one of the most common types of cancer worldwide.
Objectives:
  • Raise awareness that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide while emphasizing that it is largely preventable.
  • Promote preventive behaviors to reduce harmful ultraviolet (UV) exposure, such as using sunscreen and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours.
  • Highlight the groups at greater risk, including men, outdoor workers, and people who spend prolonged periods in the sun without adequate protection.
Facts:
  • Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, with more than 1.5 million new cases reported globally in 2022.
  • Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Although it is less common, approximately 330,000 new cases were reported worldwide in 2022.
  • Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial tanning devices is the primary risk factor for developing skin cancer.
