Overview
The prostate is part of the male reproductive system, which includes the penis, prostate, and testicles. It is located directly below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate is approximately the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder). Its function is to produce the fluid that forms part of semen.
Prostate cancer occurs when prostate cells divide abnormally and uncontrollably. As men age, the prostate tends to increase in size, which can narrow the urethra and reduce urine flow. This condition is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and is not the same as prostate cancer.
Risk Factors:
- Age: The older a man gets, the greater his risk of developing prostate cancer.
- Family History: Men who have a father, son, or brother with prostate cancer are at higher risk of developing the disease.
Facts:
- One in nine men develops prostate cancer.
- Eating a healthy diet and exercising do not prevent cancer, but they can reduce the risk of developing it.
