MOH: 30% Increase in ICU Cases Amid Respiratory Virus Activity

06 October 2026

The Ministry of Health (MOH) reported a rise in respiratory infections coinciding with the onset of the seasonal respiratory virus period. MOH explained that this increase aligns with expected seasonal activity, urging target groups to receive recommended vaccines—including the seasonal influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccines—by booking appointments through the "Sehhaty" app to help reduce the severity of illness and associated complications.

MOH stated that the past three weeks saw approximately a 30% increase in respiratory infection-related ICU admissions compared to the preceding period, coinciding with heightened activity of several respiratory viruses this season.

The Ministry emphasized the importance of preventive measures, including regular hand hygiene, adhering to coughing and sneezing etiquette, maintaining proper indoor ventilation, wearing masks, and minimizing contact with others upon experiencing respiratory symptoms to safeguard public health and curb the spread of infection.

High-risk groups for influenza complications include individuals with chronic conditions, people aged 50 and above, children between 6 months and 5 years, pregnant women, individuals with severe obesity, as well as healthcare workers.

The Ministry of Health continues its efforts in coordination with the health ecosystem to enhance preventive health, raise health awareness, protect community well-being, and improve quality of life.
