WHO Director-General Hands Over to Al-Rabiah Accreditation Certificates for Two Saudi Healthy Cities

​His Excellency the Minister of Health, Dr. Tawfiq bin Al-Rabiah, reviewed in Riyadh, Sunday with WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus the Kingdom's efforts to preserve the health and safety of pilgrims and Umrah performers, and its excellence in the mass gathering medicine, as the Kingdom has become a pioneer and a reference in the field, with many successes praised by international health organizations and agencies. 


For his part, WHO Director-General lauded the health development witnessed by the Kingdom and the achievements realized in this field. During the meeting, they discussed the means of enhancing health cooperation between the Kingdom and WHO. They also discussed other topics including comprehensive health coverage, the Kingdom's plan to combat non-communicable diseases, tuberculosis, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and vaccination safety as well as electronic health.  At the end of the meeting, Dr. Al-Rabiah received from the WHO chief two accreditation certificates for Al- Diriyah and Jalajel healthy cities.

The concept of healthy cities means that the environment of a city or village is at the level that serves and enhances health, the matter which requires coordination and joint action between various health and environment-related sectors, in addition to concerted efforts of all community members to serve and develop their city. 

The healthy cities program aims to improve the health of citizens so as to contribute to upgrading health services and environmental status in cities. These objectives include raising awareness about the environmental and health issues, attracting community's support in handling problems, developing and implementing health and environmental projects and activities. They also include expanding the resources of provinces and emirates to address health and environmental problems through mutual cooperation among all community members.
