11 January 2016

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has recently organized events of the World Antibiotic Awareness Day under the theme: “Handle with Care” at the Kingdom Center in Riyadh.

The MOH pointed out that the organization of this event in a commercial center aims at reaching a wider segment of society through direct contact to achieve awareness of the right ways and the optimal use of antibiotics, as one would rather stop taking antibiotics except when there is a medical necessity. The events include illustrating the risks resulting from antibiotics abuse and its great danger on all health sectors in the world.

The MOH highlighted the importance of such events to educate the community on how to use, keep and store antibiotics and on the proper and optimal use of medications, as well as modifying some of the misconceptions about medications and their side effects. Brochures and publications that include tips and instructions were distributed during the events, with the aim of achieving patient safety at first place and avoiding complications to the patient in the future due to medications.

Participants in the events include King Salman Hospital in Riyadh, Drug Education and Pharmaceutical Media Committee, Public Health Assistant Department at Riyadh Health Affairs General Department, National Center for Poisons and Forensic Chemistry, Saudi Food and Drug Authority, Riyadh Regional Laboratory, Charitable Health Society for Patient Care “Enayah”. Recreational and awareness corners were allocated for children, in addition to a special corner for both men and women to be vaccinated against seasonal flu. It is worth mentioning that visitors to the events amounted to more than 730 persons.
