Overview :
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Awareness Month is observed every April to raise awareness of this disorder, increase understanding of its symptoms, and promote effective management and coping strategies.
It is estimated that between 5% and 10% of the world’s population has IBS. However, many people remain undiagnosed because they are unaware of the symptoms or overlook them.
Objectives:
- Correct common misconceptions about irritable bowel syndrome.
- Raise awareness of the importance of early symptom recognition.
- Promote the role of a healthy lifestyle in managing IBS symptoms.
Facts:
- Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of abdominal pain and discomfort, often accompanied by diarrhea, constipation, or both.
- IBS symptoms may appear unpredictably and vary in severity over time.
- IBS accounts for approximately 20% to 40% of visits to gastroenterology clinics.
