Overview:
December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Disability is part of the human condition, yet few countries have adequate mechanisms to fully respond to the needs of persons with disabilities. It is essential to support the inclusion of persons with special needs, raise awareness of disability issues, and draw attention to the benefits of an inclusive and accessible society for all.
Objectives:
- Enable persons with disabilities to achieve independent development.
- Receive the best health services without discrimination.
- Enhance their self-confidence and abilities through their participation in various activities.
- Fully involve them in all aspects of life and development.
- Identify and remove obstacles and barriers to their potential.
Facts:
- More than a billion people live with a disability.
- In a number of developing countries, persons with disabilities suffer from poorer health, lower educational achievements, lower economic participation, and higher poverty rates than persons without disabilities.
- Some persons with disabilities die 20 years earlier than those without disabilities.
- One in six people worldwide suffers from a significant disability, and this number is expected to increase.
