Overview:
There are four main types of leukemia that differ according to treatment methods and extent of its respond to treatment:
- Acute myeloid leukemia.
- Acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
- Chronic myeloid leukemia.
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Scientists do not yet know what are the real causes of leukemia, but it seems that it is generated and developed as a result of a combination of several genetic factors and environmental factors together, but cancer itself is not inherited.
Objectives:
- Motivate community members to donate blood stem cells.
- Educate community about the disease and identifying it.
Facts:
The following factors may increase the risk of developing leukemia:
- Exposure to high-energy radiation from an atomic bomb or a nuclear power plant
- Exposure to chemicals such as benzene or formaldehyde.
- Blood disorders.
- Exposure to chemotherapy or radiation.
- Genetic disorders such as Down syndrome.
- Some types of viruses may cause tumors, such as hepatitis B, as well as the AIDS virus.
- A family member has had leukemia previously, but this is rare.
