The Media Information and Health Awareness Center of the Ministry of Health (MOH) advised those seeking to perform the Hajj rites and suffering from osteoporosis to gather adequate information on the disease and how to perform their Hajj rites in a safe and healthy way.

Within the same context, the Center pointed out that osteoporosis is a disease resulting in bone-thinning and its fragility, rendering it easy to be broken. And, bones that are vulnerable for fractures in relation to the afflicted patients are the bones of hip, thigh, arm, and backbone.

Therefore, they should adhere to tips that are conducive for fracture prevention such as using proper medical shoes, keeping away from wearing high-heeled or poorly-made shoes, and avoiding walking with socks.

They should also shun crowd such as circumbulation (Tawaf), ritual walking (Sa'ee), and stoning the devil ( Jamarāt); this is through having recourse on a permit such as walking and circumbulating in special vehicle, postponing stoning till night, avoiding walking on carpets or rugs making you slip and fall, keeping away from walking in the dark places, using sticks or crutches if need be, as well as the importance of being cautious when going to the water closets, especially if the ground was wet.

It is advisable to use the elevator but if it was not available, you have to take precautions when climbing the stairs. Also, it is recommended wearing properly-fit clothes or mantles, to the effect that they are not too tall leading to your fall.

Further, osteoporosis patients are urged to bring an adequate amount of the prescribed medication and use it regularly, especially calcium and vitamin D, along with the significance of adhering to a healthy diet rich in calcium and minerals, reducing caffeine consumption, and avoiding fizzy beverages.
