Health Days 2021

International Dwarfism Awareness Day

Overview:

Every year on October 25, International Dwarfism Awareness Day celebrates little people.  The day also spreads awareness for achondroplasia, a bone growth disorder that causes dwarfism. Dwarfism is characterized by having short arms and legs in comparison to the head and trunk.  People with dwarfism may also have other physical problems.  Most people with dwarfism do not have any serious problems and can lead a relatively normal life, as well as have normal life expectancies. Others could deal with some physical or social barriers.

Facts:
  • What is dwarfism?  Restricted growth, sometimes known as dwarfism, is a condition characterized by unusually short height.
  • It happens to 1 in 15,000 or 1 in 40,000 babies.
  • Restricted growth may be diagnosed before a child is born, soon afterwards, or when growth problems become more obvious as they get older.
  • Growth hormone deficiency is usually diagnosed using growth hormone stimulation tests.
  • In some cases, growth hormone therapy or a leg-lengthening procedure is sometimes used.
Objectives:
  • Raising awareness on dwarfism in the public.
