International Day of Older Persons
Introduction:
The International Day of Older Persons focuses on supporting the participation of this segment in the community, which will constitute about 20% of the world total population by 2030.  Similarly, the number of the elderly people over 60 years of age is expected to reach about 1.4 billion in the same year. The International Day of Older Persons is marked with the aim celebrating the older person as an active participant in the society and paying attention to their successful stories and experiences to benefit from.  
 
Internationally approved date: October 1st, 2014.
Locally Approved date: Dhul-Hijjah 7th, 1435H
 
Theme of the International Day of Older Persons:
"Leaving No One Behind: Promoting a Society for All"
Targeted group:
  • Old persons of both genders
  • Governmental institutions
  • National associations and organizations
  • Individuals and families engaged in the elderly care field. 
  • Workers in the field of health care and  elderly rehabilitation
  • Health workers in the health centers.
 
Objectives and general messages:
  • Educating the older persons on the importance of maintaining good health with aging, and handling properly the changes that may occur.
  • Preaching on the importance of providing the older persons with the same deal of the preventive and curative care and rehabilitation enjoyed by the other categories. 
  • Focusing on and attracting the attention to the proper ways of dealing with the older persons’ issues that should be followed to ensure that everyone gets their right.
  • Consolidating the health services and prevention measures from the communicable and non-communicable diseases as well as providing the assistive technology and rehabilitation care services.
  • Providing the necessary facilities to meet the special needs of older persons.
  • Urging other bodies concerned in general, such as non-governmental organizations and families to support the community members to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
  • Supporting the cooperation between the governmental institutions, families and individuals to create supportive environment and good care for the health and wellbeing of the old person.
