World Kidney Day
Introduction:

The World Kidney Day is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF). The World Kidney Day's aim is to raise awareness among people; health professionals and decision makers of health problems caused by kidney diseases and ways of protection. The World Kidney Day was first celebrated in 2006, and from that date on, the world still celebrates this day with a different theme and certain massages every year. The recent statistics say that 14,171 Saudis suffered from renal failure till 2012.
 
Objectives of WKD:
 
  • Raising awareness about kidney diseases.
  • Highlighting that diabetes and high blood pressure are key risk factors for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
  • Encouraging systematic screening of all patients with diabetes and hypertension for CKD.
  • Encouraging preventive behaviors.
  • Educating all medical professionals about their key role in detecting and reducing the risk of CKD, particularly in high risk populations.
  • Stressing the important role of local and national health authorities in controlling the CKD epidemic. Health authorities worldwide will have to deal with high costs if no action is taken to treat the growing number of people with CKD.
  • Encouraging the act of organ donation as a life-saving initiative.
