Indigestion or acid reflux is a common occurrence in pregnancy, which can be caused by hormonal changes and the pressure of the fetus on the stomach.

Causes of indigestion during pregnancy:
  • Hormonal changes.
  • Pressure of the fetus on the stomach.
Heartburn:
It is a burning pain in the throat or chest, caused by stomach acid escaping into the esophagus and irritating the lining. Indigestion and heartburn can occur in pregnant women due to:
  • Eat a big meal.
  • Eat foods rich in fat.
  • Eat chocolate.
  • Drinking fruit juice or caffeinated beverages (e.g. coffee, tea)
  • Feeling anxious.
Symptoms of indigestion and heartburn:
A burning sensation or pain in the chest.
  • Heartburn
  • Feeling of fullness, heaviness, or bloating.
  • Belching.
  • Feeling tired.
  • Vomiting.
  • Symptoms usually appear shortly after eating or drinking. Symptoms can appear at any time during pregnancy, but they are more common from the 27th week of pregnancy.

  • Stomach pain.
Tips for reducing indigestion and stomach acidity:
  • Eat small meals instead of 3 main meals.
  • Avoid eating right before bed.
  • Avoid foods and drinks that cause heartburn.
  • Minimize caffeinated drinks and spicy or fatty foods.
  • Sit upright when eating, as it relieves pressure on the stomach.
  • Avoid eating and drinking at the same time; Which may make the stomach full.
  • Support the head and shoulder together with pillows when sleeping; To prevent stomach acid.
  • Stop smoking.
  • The doctor may prescribe medication to reduce the amount of acid in the stomach.
