Hypertension and COVID-19

​​​​Key recommendations to protect patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) from the risk of contracting COVID-19:

  • Stay home as much as possible and avoid gatherings.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. 
  • Avoid close contact with people who have symptoms.  
  • Avoid contact with people who have COVID-19 symptoms. 
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and utensils at home. 
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or use the inside of your elbow. Make sure you wash your hands with soap and water for 40 seconds afterwards. Use an alcohol-based sanitizer for 20 seconds if soap and water are not available.
  • Ensure you have at a home a supply of medications that is enough for at least 2 weeks to avoid going out.
  • Avoid leaving your home unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • Avoid all unnecessary trips and air travel.
  • Avoid tension and stress. Stress is one of the top causes of high blood pressure.
  • Avoid news that reflects a negative image of the current situation.
  • Look after your health and maintain a healthy weight by eating healthy, balanced meals, and exercising on a daily basis.
  • Get good-quality sleep.
  • Make time for relaxing and doing some of your favorite activities.
  • Contact your doctor if you notice any COVID-19 symptoms or feel constant fatigue.

Recommendations for patients with hypertension and their families:
  • Maintain a healthy diet and avoid overeating.
  • Exercise regularly at home.
  • Take your medications as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Regularly measure your blood pressure at home (depending on your case) and take notes every one or two weeks.
  • High blood pressure patients must monitor and follow up their condition to ensure that blood pressure is controlled and that it stays within a healthy range.
