International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
 
 “Make health your "new high" in life, not drugs!”
 
Introduction:
June 26, every year, marks the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which was first appointed by the UN General Assembly in 1987, with the aim to highlight the objectives agreed upon by the member states, in quest for an international community free from drug abuse.
 
Global Statistics:
  • About 200 million persons across the world, ranging from 15 to 64 years old, use drugs at least once a year, 25 million out of whom are drug addicts.
  • About 200.000 deaths around the world every year are associated with drugs.
  • Three million people using drugs through injection throughout the world suffer from AIDS.
  • 7.4 million people using drugs through injection throughout the world suffer from hepatitis C.
  • 2.3 million people using drugs through injection throughout the world suffer from hepatitis B.
Domestic Statistics:
  • About 0.54% (nearly 0.5 per cent) of Saudis are drug users.
  • The proportion of female drug users has risen by 20% over the past years in a number of the Kingdom's regions, amounting to about 320 cases, according to statistics.
  • 55% of drug users range from 19 to 30 years old.
