Field Epidemiology Training Program
Functions and Responsibilities
  • Train health professionals on epidemiological survey, epidemiological surveillance for the communicable and non-communicable diseases, and other pressing national and international health issues.
  • Participate in training the new recruits in epidemiological diploma and the public health Master's degree, epidemiology department, King Saud University, as well as the Saudi fellowship physicians of community medicine, in collaboration with the College of Medicine, King Saud University, and the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
  • Study the epidemiological outbreaks through conducting epidemiological survey for the cases and the health problems that record abnormal increase, and submit a report on them demonstrating their causes and the proper procedure to control them and prevent their recurrence. 
  • Do epidemiological studies for the pressing health problems in all regions across the Kingdom to secure practical programs to control them, in cooperation with the concerned bodies within and outside the Ministry of Health (MOH). 
  • Annually participate with epidemiological team as part of the prevention medicine teams in the Hajj season; with the aim of training, conducting the field studies and taking part in the epidemiological survey and surveillance for the health problems that could take place during the Hajj season.
  • Issue an annual quarterly scientific bulletin entitling “Saudi Epidemiology Bulletin” to publish the findings of the field studies conducted by the Program; to utilize them in developing the epidemiological programs and activities of the disease control and surveillance.
  • Prepare standards, assessing and develop epidemiological monitoring and surveillance required for early detection of communicable and non-communicable diseases, to identify changes of disease-related clinical and environmental patterns. 
  • Collaborate with MOH’s different sectors and Health Affairs; to draw on their human and technical capabilities; to conduct epidemiological studies and epidemiological control.  
  • Provide consultation and technical expertise on prevention fields and health studies.
  • Prepare and develop a “reference information register” on epidemiology and health problems in Saudi Arabia.
  • Create a network of epidemiological control centers, and coordinate with them to conduct the epidemiological surveillance; in order to control and treat them.
  • Initiate and enhance the rapid response epidemiological intervention teams for the epidemiological diseases that pose imminent risk to community; to control them and draw up ways to eliminate them.
  • Coordinate internationally to implement initiatives in disease prevention and control, as well as capitalize on the experience of other states in epidemiology.
  • Collaborate with global specialized organizations and institutions; to secure a highly professional level that positively helps boost public health.
  • Prepare the program’s annual budget.
  • Prepare periodical reports on the program activities, achievements and development suggestions; and submit them to the Deputy Minister for Public Health.
  • ​​​Any other functions assigned to the Program in its field of competence.
